Kirk,
Allan, Nebraska Cowman and others I know have home based businesses and are making them work. It is a great thing to do and there are perks to it. Please be aware right off the bat though that it will be much more work than it appears to be. Family and friends will figure since you are home you really aren't working.. so it is OK to just stop in and visit a while. The IRS isn't a deficit in your weekly check. They lean over your shoulder and your checkbook. Can your insurance handle a situation if a customer thinks you screwed up? When in business for yourself you have to be much more customer oriented than large businesses because you don't have the power of mass advertising, just word of mouth. Every customer counts BIG in a small business. Wall mart doesn't worry about ticking off one shopper, it may be a make or break situation for you. Being in business for you too means giving up a 9-5 schedule and most probably many weekends. Most businesses take a couple of years or more to start turning a profit. Make sure you can handle that or a cut in disposable income for a while. Self-employment takes discipline that most people develop to late to keep their business afloat.
I don't want to be Mr. Negative. I hope you find your home business. There is not much more rewarding an experience than to be self-sufficient and not have to play office politics. Please just enter it with eyes wide open and be prepared to make a lot of personal sacrifices before walking into the Lexis dealership. Good luck! It took me years to settle into my business. On hindsight it should have happened long ago, but then, I wasn't ready then for the commitment I have made now.

Today's Featured Article - Harvestin Hay: The Early Years (Part 2) - by Pat Browning. The summer of 1950 was the start of a new era in farming for our family. I was thirteen, and Kathy (my oldest sister) was seven. At this age, I believed tractor farming was the only way, hot stuff -- and given a chance I probably would have used the tractor, Dad's first, a 1936 Model "A" John Deere, to go bring in the cows! And I think Dad was ready for some automation too. And so it was that we acquired a good, used J. I. Case, wire tie hay baler. In addition to a person to drive th ... [Read Article]
