That's pretty much what the purists were saying about hot rods 30 years ago. Now, a decent hot rod is worth double what the same car in stock condition will bring, except for a few rare exceptions. As far as how to do it, look at adapting the AC bell housing to the Chevy engine with an adapter plate (3/8" plate, cut and drilled such that both the block and bell housing bolt to it).
