I think there is a detent ball and spring missing from the reverse shift rail. This would allow the gear to slide into mesh when not intended, and or make the noise if it could not get into gear while moving. Take the shifter out of the tower. (two plugs cover the pivot pin, then it punches out pretty easily) look inside and you will likely find a set of three slots in the area near the bottom of the tower. One of these slots will be far out of alignment with the rest. Use a large screw driver to align them. (wiggling the rear tires back and forth may be needed with the clutch down) once out of gear it should be partially fixed, or at least diagnosed. The trans cover will need to come off to fix it by replacing the spring in the rail. If the slots are aligned perfectly, the issue is a much more serious bearing failure. The diagnosis is similar, but much more disassembly of tranny gears is needed. Best of luck, and may it be the detent ball and spring. JimN
