I take care of an elderly gentleman who owns a 49 Ferguson tractor. He cannot remember how to change the fluids in it. The oil is in the front, the transmission fluid is in the middle, and the differential is in the back. The only problem is that I don"t know how to put gear oil into the differential. Can anyone help me so that I can help him take care of his tractor?

The engine oil is under the engine, as is the oil filter (in the oil filter housing). Expect 4 to 5 quarts of oil..

The transmission/differental/hydraulics all share the same oil but there are three different plugs on the trans/rear case to drain it (it has compartments that share the same oil supply, but they will not drain properly without removing all of them). BUT THERE IS 5 GALLONS of oil!!!!!.... And unless you are ready for lots of oil, and you are sure it needs it, I'd skip this... It doesn't need to be done very often and it is better to flush it out anyway (see the flush procedure thread of Jeff-OH as a link). The transmission/differential/hydraulics fill is on the top of the transmission cover by the gear shift. The dip stick is behind your right foot when sitting on the tractor.

Any problems, then come back with other questions....

If you could find the owner's manual (or buy a new one... sold many places including this site), that would help with this maintenance...

Thank you for your help. I do have a few more questions and info.

I found where the engine oil is. I thought that's what he was talking about changing in the tractor, but he wants to change the differential/ transmission/ hydraulics oil. He has drained a lot of this oil out. He knew where 2 plugs are, but not the third. The two he knows where are are 1- under the transmission (directly under the gear shift) and 2-between the back two wheels. Can you explain to me how to find the third?

Also, he just asked me to ask if there is something he can do to make the hydraulics system work more efficiently? He wants to know how to overhaul the hydraulics system.

Thanks for your information-he now knows how to put the oil back in the tractor.

I think that the one you are missing is the middle one... It is between the other two and is the largest one... it is about two inches in diameter.. The other two should have drained most of the oil, but there is still more at this plug...

As for overhauling the hydraulic system, I'd rather rebuild the engine than tackle this... but I am going to make the assumption that he has done this kind of thing before, so maybe he is ready to tackle a big project... if he doesn't know where the drain plugs are, I am probably too optimistic..... It is not for the timid.. it has all kinds of springs, linkages, valves, gears, etc. that have to be dealt with... . You have to take the PTO out, then the hydraulic pump, then the lift cover assembly... and then get all that back in, hooked up, adjusted and working again... There are special tools and the likelyhood of frozen fasteners that will require heat (as in torch).... And it is not something that should be started without the Shop manual!!!...

That is the first step.. see the link for a low cost place that sells them.... they are $15 to $20 plus some shipping... Also, ebay has them, as probably does this site, but they don't have a picture so I can't be sure it is the original version... J2
