Try to work a deal to go in on commission. Head for at least 45% if you are furnishing your own tools (other than big stuff the company requires). Check some of the independent shops too. Some of them are owned by Harley Certified (or accepted) mechanics, and qualify to do factory approved repairs and warranty, and pay a little better. I do custom work, so it is not comparable. My shop is a small family owned and operated business, with my sons and daughter helping out. In the Central area of Texas, the HD dealerships are in the $70.00 per hour labor rate. My rate is less, and get a lot of business, but I've been working on them for a while, and have a good rep. I have also worked in the auto body repair business at dealerships, and made good money there. It's a lot different than a bike shop though. I always furnished my own tools, and varied from 45% to 60% of the hourly rate. Even at 60, I can hold my own with the younger folks, but I learned some 45 years ago from good men who taught me right in both fields.
