I was in Gatlinburg in April. Took 75 south to Knoxville, then 40 over to the Gatlinburg exit which takes you through Piegon Forge. The traffic in Pigeon Forge is bad to say the least, especially if there is some kind of festival goin on. Took me 3 1/2 hours to go about 9 miles. They had a car show going on. Anyway, once in Gatlingburg at our condo all was fine. We went to the Great Smokey National Park most of our vacation. Also went to the Biltmore Mansion in North Carolina, real nice drive. Stayed out of Piegon Forge, it's just a tourist trap. Gatlinburg has all the stores you may want to visit and then some. I compared it to Mackinaw Island if you get my drift. Have fun !! You can stay on 40 out of knoxville and go a little further East past Pigeon Forge and then exit to cut back to Gatlinburg.
