I don't know if I'm helping but this might explain it a little bit, I've figured this out on my own:
The last number or last 2 numbers are the number of cylinders. I.E.- 3208 is 8 cyl, 3412 is 12 cyl, 3516 is 16 cyl, 3406 is 6 cyl, 3054 is a 4 cyl. etc. The first 2 numbers seem to be the "series". I.E.- a 3508 is an 8 cyl version of a 3516, etc. It gets you close, but it's not perfect. I.E. a 3114 is a 4 cyl version of a 3116. A 3126 is a larger displacement 3116, but it uses the same block. A 3176 is a completely different engine, but still a 6 cyl.
