I"ve had that happen to my old "01 F-150 with the 5.4 twice, and once in my "05 F-250 with the 5.4. I hear a lot of 5.4 V8"s around here with exhaust leaks, so I figured it was a common problem. I never priced having it fixed at Ford, but alway"s wondered what they"d charge. I haven"t had much trouble fixing them yet. I pull off the wheel, and wheel well, and use a few universal"s and extensions on a ratchet, and the nuts usually back right off. The studs that broke off came out with vise grips, but I was fortunate enough that they broke high enough to leave room for visegrips.
Thats the only trouble I"ve ever heard about these engines. I wondered if I had my foot in it too much pulling my trailer over the mountain here. Thought the manifold got too hot. Thats my theory anyway. I"m trying to take it easy now, we"ll see how that goes.
