IMHO, out here in the boondocks where response time from the County Mounties can be a half hour or more, it's my studied opinion a security system would be wasted money. Even if someone broke in while you're not home, they'd have you cleaned out and have disappeared by the time the law arrived.
And this is by no means a put-down on the law officers. They simply can't be everywhere at once.
I remember once about 30 years ago I was tending to livestock one evening when the County Sheriff drove in and said a convicted murderer had escaped from the pen and was believed to be in our area. If confronted, he was to be considered dangerous. The Sheriff then left to alert the rest of the neighbors.
In the scheme of things, the next thing I needed to do was get a feed truck out of a remote shed that had been closed up all day. I don't know what the gun control nuts would have done, but you'd darn well better believe I had a loaded pistol in my hand then I entered the shed. They found the guy asleep under a bridge a couple of miles away the next morning.
I guess the bottom line is, I'd rather depend on myself than someone or something else.
