Has anyone else had this happen?
'89 Chevy 1500 4x4 X cab long box pickup with rear ABS.
Whenever the pickup is accelerating, and nothing touching the brakes, the brake warning light comes on as the speedo passes 37 mph. The light then stays on until the ignition is turned off. Then the light acts normal and stays off--until you exceed 37 mph. It's predictable, time after time. The brakes work normally, otherwise.
Since the front pads and rear shoes are about 70%, and I replaced the master cylinder simply to eliminate it, I have to assume it's an ABS problem. There's no separate ABS light.
In general, when the ABS turns the light on, it means there's a problem with the ABS and the ABS has disabled itself. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the brake system itself, or any impending disaster, it just means the ABS isn't working. I can live without the rear wheel ABS as long as I know that's what it is, and the light isn't noticeable enough to be a distraction. The only thing is, if a different problem were to turn the light on, you wouldn't know it.
