The bean head you saw works great once you have the field opened up. CAN'T go across the rows or even at an angle. The head looks like a corn head with "snouts" that will pick up bean plants to some extent. There are 2 "belts", one on each side of the row. They went alongside the bean stem to hold it upright and there was a disc at the bottom where the plant first was grabbed by the belts. This disc had about 6 sickle sections and rotated very quickly to cut the bean off. The belts then transported the bean stalk to the back of the head where the bean was taken to the center of the head by the cross auger. The theroy was that the belts held the plant while it was cut off and you had almost no shatter. The speed of the belts and the cutters were controled by the same hyd. that would run a reel, so it could be speeded up or slowed down to match the ground speed. OH YEAH, they are fast, but you need a reel head to open the fields and it is tough to use on curves.
