No, JLM, I never said that just because you have a tattoo you are automatically a criminal. For that matter, my own daughter-in-law has a tattoo and she is about as honest a person as you will meet.
What I did say is that if you have visible tattoos, a lot of people will assume that you have a criminal background. Given the association of tattoos with criminal activities, particularly gangs, this is hardly surprising. And it is also not surprising that a lot of former gang members are going through very painful tattoo removal because of the stigma associated with those tattoos.
You chose to be tattooed. I don't know why you wanted to be tattooed nor do I particularly care. You no doubt had a pretty good idea what people would think when they saw your tattoos, but you chose do do it in spite (or perhaps because of) what other people would think. I don't see where you have any right to complain if someone looks at you and thinks: "that man has a tattoo, he might be a criminal." Is that stereotyping? Perhaps. But it's hardly the same thing as saying "all blacks are criminals", or "all Mexicans are criminals". The difference is that you CHOOSE to wear a tattoo.
