John, you never said how the compression test came out? If you can see scores or pits in the cylinder walls, it probably should be bored and fitted with new pistons. Never had any luck with oversizing the rings myself. Have the valves gone over as well, not expensive but critical to the end result and longevity of the engine! Tell your friend thanks for everything, but move on.
