battery replacement performance

As cold weather is upon us, we are experiencing harder starting and many of us are thinking about converting to 12 volts to improve cranking. There is one other thing we should consider with our tractors. Most of us use automotive batteries in our vintage tractors and are concerned about getting a battery capable of doing the job while still leaving some change in our pockets. I have known from my own experience that some(most) of the discount auto batteries were not performing to stated amperage. I have tried to use cold cranking amps (CCA) as an indicator but now that rating has been shot to **** by some imaginative marketers as they have moved the temp from 0 F to 32 F and call it cold cranking amps for an "Auto South" rating. Go to the Sears website and reference DieHard ratings. The chart at this website http://www.interstatebatteries.com/products/product_line/automobile_lines.htm indicates the performance for many of the battery manufacturers products and as you can see the published data is meaningless. The best indicator that I have of performance of a battery comes from the actual weight and the heavier the better. I now buy the largest in overall size and the heaviest battery that will fit the box. What do the rest of you tractor enthusiasts do when it is time to replace a battery in a work machine?
