Back in the days of sail, there was an old clipper captain retired from the sea and took up farmin', to the great amusement of his neighbors.
He was out bustin' up some ground with a team of oxen and was havin an awful time. If they'd go at all, they were apt to go in any direction. Thought he might have had the off ox on the on side and switched 'em out and things only got worse. He figured they were dumb, and went back to the barn and brought out his mule, hitched her in front of the oxen, with the idea tshe'd lead them in a straight line.
Wasn't long before he had an awful mess, worse than before. Neighbor leanin' up against the fence, takin' in the scene hollers out, "What seems to be the trouble, cappy?"
Ol' captain sez, "Not sure, but I'm thinkin' I got the larboard ox on the starboard side, and Jenny's got fouled in the riggin'."
