Square bales gave work to teenagers boys and girls alike.Girls usually drove the trucks or tractors pulling wagons but some girls could load hay just fine.The round balers killed the chance for kids to make some money.Every improvement in farm equipment put more farm workers out of work.I was working in a tv shop,business was slow and got laid off.Went across the road where a dairy farmer was baling hay and went to work.Never went back to the TV shop and ended up making more money working on 2 neighboring farms.Not much chance of doing this today.Kids that did farm work seemed to stay out of trouble,too tired to raise hell.Round bales have a lot of waste.Sheepman said he figured 10to15%.I used to buy a few round bales when pasture got poor.I noticed cattle seem to eat a lot more hay when round bales were fed.I had a bull that used to roll the bales around the pasture.I dumped them off the truck flat so they would stay put and the bull would stand them up and roll them thru the fence.Price of square bales are looking good these days.
