Like the others said, white smoke from a gas engine usually means water from someplace. In a diesel it can mean fuel's not getting burned at all, like when pulling a truck or something to start it. Pitch black usually means a rich mixture, either from too much fuel or too little air, as in a dirty air cleaner. Bluish smoke usually means crankcase oil, as in leaky valve seals (at start) or rings (under power). And often there is some supplemental stink associated with each hue to help identify it. Ah, to be able to always run fresh machinery...
