This thread is a little old but I'll add my 2 cents worth. The 2 cylinder vs 4 cylinder argument is invalid because the weight of the huge JD flywheel stores energy from power strokes to smooth the power cycle on the off revolution. I've never seen it an issue except in dead weight pulling on cement (there you need to be just as smooth as possible and horse power was seldom an issue, don't know if anybody does this any more or not it was big in the early 60's) Of course the heavy flywheel bites on the other side. I wouldn't want to be around the old "G" that I pulled when I was a kid if it was turning 5 or 6 k. The energy trying to explode that wheel would be tremendous. (I did get it up to 1600 or 1700 rpm a few times, that will get you about 60 70 horse with nothing but 6000 ft heads and M&W pistons, enought to beat stock 560 IH's)
