Sometime in the early 70's my dad traded for a Sun-Master 3pointrotary mower. Dad stuck it behind an IH 240 Utility he owned at the time, and did a few custom mowing jobs. The deck was made of some pretty heavy-gauge diamond-plate steel, and I'd imagine you could've mowed a rockpile and never hurt the deck.

But one day, while out mowing a rough field, the vertical shaft on the gearbox broke, slinging the swinging blade assembly out from under the mower and cutting the best of the rear tires on the 240U from bead to bead. After replacing the tire, Dad tried to contact the company to get a new shaft for the gearbox. He was finally referred to an industrial powertrain outfit out of Indianapolis for the shaft. Long story short, he didn't replace the shaft because it cost over half the price of a new SideWinder rotary mower, and he sold the remainder for scrap.

The customer who traded the mower had evidently had problems getting blades for the mower, as he told Dad he'd been going to the local junkyard and having them cut him some blades out of heavy truck springs...and, as I said, this was in the early 1970's. So I honestly have my doubts about availability these days.
