Mike, First of all I AM NOT A FORD MAN NOR AM I FAMILIAR WITH ITS WIRING BUTTTTTTTTT AM KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT SOME ELEC IGNITION SYSTEMS soooooooo take this FWIW which aint beans.

Those elec switch boxes wont tolerate any reverse polarity, I assume your battery n all else is at Neg ground, right?? Many have but 2 wires leading to the internal unit, one wires to the + side of the ignition coil and the other its - terminal, is yours like that???? And then ALSO on the coils + input terminal is a wire down from the ignition switch. That terminal is what feeds voltage to the coil PLUS it feeds the elec switch its voltage. (why theres 2 wires on coils + and only one on its -)

If it ONLY runs when the start button is depressed, I question how the + input (from switch to coil) wiring is connected to your coil and if thats correct??? If you turn the Ignition on WITHOUT depressing the start button, isnt there hot 6 volts battery voltage on your coils lil + input terminal at all times AS IT SHOULD BE
ORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR is your coil ONLY reading hot battery voltage when the start button is depressed?????

If the ignition switch is bad or its wiring and it DOES NOT supply voltage to the coil and elec ignition unit when switched ON, maybe thats the whole problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you suspect the ignition switch does not supply voltage to the coil when switched ON try to temporarily hot wire voltage to the coil n see if she runs then.

Other thoughts are the elec switch unit isnt getting a good ground to the distributors plate but I wonder about your ignition switch and if its good (hot wire test would show) and its wiring cuz when you turn the ignition switch ON it ought to supply voltage to the coil and the unit. What the elc switch does is make n break the circuit from the coils - from getting to ground just like what happens when the points are closed then break open.

AGAIN IM NOT a Ford man nor familiar with them butttttt for any coil to work there MUST BE voltage to it when the ignition is switched on and it must remain hot with voltage on its + input terminal at all times and NOT BE HOT ONLY when any starter button is depressed, otherwise it would run when she cranking but not otherwise.

The only other possibility is something (elec unit or coil) isnt getting a good ground but backfeeds somehow when the start button is depressed. That or as Allan has pointed out from experience (the BEST teacher) YOUR UNIT IS JUST BADDDDDDDDDDDDDD GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

John T NOT a Ford man so no warranty lol but maybe you just have an ignition switch or its wiring problem???????

Today's Featured Article - New Life for an Old Allis - by Tyler Woods. My friend Jon, has an old '39 Allis Chalmers B. He thought it a marginal tractor that had long since served its time. She smoked terribly and never had much power but he couldn't afford another so he was limping along with what he had. Jon's Allis has a small front loader and though it doesn't carry much, it serves his needs. It was the hard starting and low power that made him think it was time to replace the old girl. Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start ... [Read Article]
