That is a tough one, it takes an articulate person and then some to get someone to listen or try something new sometimes, and you don't want to over step your boundaries either. It's good to see you are kind of working togther, leading by example is the only thing that seems to work for in situations like that and I have grown tired of trying to be helpful to people who don't appreciate it, also keeping in mind a preference for staying out of others affairs unless they ask or really need a hand getting something done.

I've learned to distance myself from our place, where we have 20 something horses at moment. It's the same situation, confident about what you know and what you can do, having an eye for details, and doing things properly, seems to get in the way, more than help. You see money being wasted on things, inefficient work practices, and hired help as worthless as they come, at least in the first year I have observed. Oh and I tried, nothing like pulling the pin on a grenade and holding onto it LOL.... talking to a wall comes to mind too LOL !!! Now, a year ago, I hired someone who is about 30, local person from a family with farm property, who enjoys what he does. He's still there and a really good sort, we work well together and he does right by watching the place and taking care of the horses which he takes a lot of pride in. Through careful planning we have both worked together to expose the bad habits of someone who has been a payroll leach for there for years and as much as I told them he was worthless, they never listened. Dear old dad hired a guy last year who was shooting up oxycontin, and a real jerk, would take our tractor a few miles down the road without asking to get beer etc. etc. The nerve of some people. I've learned to control myself, but one afternoon I warmed up on a steel dumpster and was headed for him next, my guy got in between us and saved him from a violent beating and me from assaulting the guy. Bringing drugs like that to a place where kids come for lessons and training, our neighbor was afraid to send his kids over alone, that was all it took, hey it ain't my place but but being a blood relative, no I aint gonna walk away, I take no crap from anyone when your on our soil. I know it ain't right and I'd have caused myself a lot of grief, but this guy barely escaped my rage towards him, I let into dear old dad over unfortunatel too, called him an idiot ! ( The kid who knows it all and the father who knows nothing mentality LOL - well I'm still young at heart and take a lot of pride in what I do, he understands that, we get along fine, always respect the guy no matter what )

He hired a dud and a dangerous one too, he may have been a molester as well. I respect my father but for awhile there he did not seem himself, hiring and putting up with such crap, he was a special forces guy, Nam and when I was a kid at the place where I reside now all these years later, it was not long after he served his country, the guy would put up with no crap and even cleaned up a bunch of wiseacres in a local establisment one night, which I heard about from other locals years later,which I'd have not believed, he never really discussed much about his days in the service until years later and I'm sure he was well trained, so I'd imagine the possibilities now, not then. He'd have never put up with this crap from anyone and if badgered enough, you'd best watch your step years ago, and to know him you'd not think he would be dangerous to your health by any means if you crossed him.

I eventually went and spoke to the state police, about the situation, also asking people I knew in the NYS police how to handle it without going the route that would have gotten me in trouble, as well as several other agencies to see if any outstanding warrants were out on the guy, I had copied his ID and SSN before his last check was given, a practice that should be done at the hiring. I had already fired him, nope can't do that, so I had suffer with a guy all summer that most people would have probably killed and buried in the back. Myself and the guy I hired finally exposed the guy and he was fired, but all the while the distraction was immense and kept me from being able to enjoy the place and do productive work, because I had to re-do his everyday and he was paid to do it, I always told them, help is first, I'll take left overs.

The most recent firing took months to expose the guy, and he was another one who could have suffered the wrath, I went by his place and discovered abused animals, barely fed, dogs stacked in cages, and I said to dad, this is the kind of guy you think is of moral standards and takes care of the horses you all seem to love so much..... I'd post a photo of his dump, but it don't matter, I did some heavy reconaissance at his place and he did get a visit from several authorities, I told him point blank, I'd best never see him step foot on this place again, and if I hear of any retalliation, he'd have himself a lot of trouble on his hands. Here's a guy who does not shower or clean himself, stinks to high heaven, drives a mobile landfill, has a fortune in the bank, no running water, electricity, house is filled with garbage, ininhabitable, he lives in a little trailer surrounded by garbage and junk. Don't drink though, but he was a heavy boozer years ago, no all of this is none of my business, but you don't come to work and represent our place reeking of filth and looking the same. He was worthless, the money they wasted on the little work he did. Well, it took long enough and he was fired, and now the old man is himself again, don't get in his way. He actually fired an arrogant, unbearable newlywed couple from the other big farm we are associated with, now that is nerve I tell ya and it stuck, I thinks he's himself again !!!!!

I think now, that I've kept some distance, planted a few seeds about certain things, it's been a lot more effective and I don't get so riled up about the bad things I see and want to change, all the good changes made were done through subtle hints and actions, seems to work much better and I won't end up in cuffs for beating the daylights out of a druggie !
