If you don't know what brands to buy, go to a reputable diesel shop for your GP's. I won't mention any names here, but I know of two GP brands sold at auto supplies which are much poorer than some more desirable brands for longevity. (They don't last.) If you wind up with a set of poor GP's, they may heat up slower, making for harder, smoky starts. Some crappy units have been known to overheat, and then break off and fall into the cylinder, which can get ugly. AC-Delco and Bosch dual-coil units are good, as well as a couple of other brands. The moral if the story is, don't have a zit-faced kid at an auto supply pick and choose the GP's for your $12,000.00 diesel engine. Go to the pro's at a diesel shop, or read up on the subject, and make an informed choice as to what brand and part number to buy, and then, armed with the part #, you can get them or order them at auto supplies, even if they are clueless about looking them up. As a 6.5 diesel owner, if you are not already a member, I would suggest a (paid) membership to TheDieselPage.com. This subject has been discussed in detail over there, and there is TONS of good information on the board, and in the searchable archives. This and other information may save you the cost of membership a thousand times over. (That being said, I am not in any way associated with the folks behind TheDieselPage, only a satisfied member.)

It’s amazing how a little floor jack can lift tons and tons of weight with just the flick of a handle. What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul
