Dave on them german engines and like the D361-D407 with age and somebody doing a valve job incorrectly will have and affect on COLD start and also cranking speed . valve protruission or ression can and will change total coperssion along with injectors that are not cracking correctly or if the spray pattren is not as pre spec. also if the cranking pressure of the injection pump is off it will affect cold start. Timming also has and affect So with out covering all the bases it is a guees as to just why yours is not starting like it should and with out spending a BUNCH of money ya can't find the problem a couple broken top rings cna be also the problem and realy not show up till ya just happen to pul the engine apart and find it. Yea i know some help you are .
