In Illinois some counties sporadically have a used tire amnesty day. On one parcel of purchased land, I removed and took approximately 300 tires to one of these gatherings. Don't try to burn 50 tires, you will able to see it for miles, and perhaps result in some unwanted attention as others have stated. I think the law allows sending old tires to the landfill if they are in pieces. Although tearing up and sending 50 tires would be quite an achievement If I tried this trick, I would be sure they were in pieces no larger than 8 inches square and sent in trash bags or old seed corn/wheat/soybean bags. If you burn the tires, don't do more than 3-4 at a time. Stack wood on top the tires and be sure it is burning good when the tires ignite. The flames from the wood will cause a secondary burn of the tire smoke, and clean it up somewhat. It's difficult, but not impossible to have little black smoke. It just takes a very hot fire. A fluidized bed is the goal but if my memory serves me correctly, temperatures need to be around 3000 degrees and you need to pump in air.

Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start
