I suspect BBx has it right. Plants are amazing in their tenacity and ability to grow in places they've got no business... That said asphalt will last longer on a good base thats been properly compact with a compactor and not just a roller. Recycled pavement makes an excellent base particularly if its hit with a compactor. If you can get a sheepsfoot roller on the base and then put down recycled pavement, hit that with a compactor, then pave and hit that good (real good, not state crew "good") with a roller it'll last a long time.
