Drove my mom's new VW to the state fair (about 60 miles from home) when I was a kid, and when I came out to the parking lot at about 1 AM to leave, the VW key didn't work in the door. Was about to break a wing window, but decided to call home first and see if she would rather come up and get me. Turns out the door lock mechanism had broken, and she had had it replaced- the new key looked like a house key, so I hadn't tried it. Sure glad I made that call.
