I have had an offer of $126 an acre to put my farm of 220 tillable and tiled acres into the CREP program here in Michigan. They would block up all drainage and allow to happen whatever happens. I would have to plant some grass with compensation for expense. I could also plant native trees, with compensation. I retain all owners rights otherwise. The contract runs for 15 years. My main worry is that is that when the contract runs out they will stop paying, declare the land wetlands and forbid any other use of the property. For this reason I am not going forward with the contract, But I was wondering if any of you Michigan farmers might care to share an opinion on this program.
