I would think 6 to 10.5 would be the "normal" range for most motors. Kero burners were lowest ratios, below 5, to prevent pinking, and pre lead-free engines with electronic sensing (that retards the ignition, on sensing detonation), were at the top end, as european car manufacturers went for smaller engines with higher compression rather than "cubes" like the american ones. Of course, there are always those that say "what is gas?" and use that term for any special mixture of methyl, ethyl, or whatever, including water injection. F1 cars all burn the same fuel because they used to have special formulations from their sponsors to up the octane rating, so the minions buying their product thought it was better than someone elses! But there we are, even a diesel comp ratio would run on a gas engine quite nicely - at the summit of Everest! Regards, RAB
