I tangled with some sweet gum when I was living in South Carolina. I wondered why that old feller was laughing so hard when I went by with a trailer load of it. Set a wedge on the top of a green chunk, gave it a mighty swat with a twelve pound sledge and bounced that wedge about 10 feet in the air. Left a teeny little dent in the top of the piece...
