To try to explain think of it this way. Your Ford 640 has TRANSMISSION PTO. When you are traveling in any gear with the PTO working and push in the clutch both the transmission ( tractor movement ) and the PTO stop working at the same time. You have one clutch that controls both. With LIVE PTO when you are traveling in gear with the PTO working you can stop the tractor movement while the PTO continues to work. Commonly this is with a 2 stage clutch ( Ford 660, 860, etc. ) To stop tractor movement the clutch is pushed down 1/2 way to also stop the PTO you push the clutch all the way down. On some other tractor brands there were hand clutchs for PTO. With this type of PTO the tractor movement had to stop before the PTO would stop. There also are INDEPENDENT PTO where the foot clutch only controls the tractor movement and a seperate clutch system controls the PTO. With this type of PTO tractor movement and PTO operation were independent of each other. P.S. I have a Ford 640 also, they are good tractors. 6XX = 132 cubic inch engine, X4X = four speed transmission with transmission PTO, XX0 = made / sold 65 - 67.

Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start
