The primer you use needs to be compatible with the paint you use for the top coat. If you will be using a basic enamel paint, such as you would buy at the farm store, then you should be able to use a primer in spray cans of the same brand. One thing to remember though, when your tractor was originally painted, the manufacturer did not use any primer, it was just simply painted. I have to agree with Nebraska Cowman, the primer is sometimes an unnecessary step. The only time I use primer on my red tractors is when I need to fill in some slight rust pits on the sheet metal.
