IH offered engines equipped to operate at higher elevations, typically 5000 and 8000 ft elevations, where the air was thinner. This option was just pistons with a flat-topped higher level on the piston, about 1/4" to 5/16" for the 5000 ft, and maybe 3/8" to 1/2" for the 8000 ft versions. That's what they mean when saying "Stepped Head". This raised surface increases compression pressure and boosts HP especially at sea level or lower elevations. Dad had 5000 ft elevation 4" pistons put in His '51 M in about 1957 or 1958 and it would walk away and hide from His Super M-TA. Even the IH Firecrater pistons were available in higher elevation styles. With a distillate head I'd run them with the gas manifolds on gasoline.
