Gas/Fuel guage check

Can someone post directions or instructions on how to check out a fuel/gas guage? I have two that don't work, and I'm getting tired of guessing how much is in the tank. (One has a curved filler neck, so you can't see to check, the other has a tapered and stepped bottom, so even looking down into the tank doesn't tell you much. Need to get those fuel guages fixed! Thanks
