Questions: How much money do you want to spend? How old of a tractor are you "comfortable" with? For your less than 40 acres, you don't really need more than about 35hp. Common tractors in this size include: MH 50, aka MF 50, 1956-58, 38 pto hp MF 35, 1963-4. 37.7 pto hp MF 135, 1964-75, 37.8 pto hp JD 1020, 1965-72, 38 pto hp OL s55, 1954-8, 34 pto hp OL 550, 1963-75, 39 pto hp IH 340, 1958-63, 38 pto hp IH 404, 1960-67, 36.7 pto hp AC D15, 1960-62, 40 pto hp AC D15 II, 1963-8, 46 pto hp(gas,36 pto hp Diesel) There are also some older tractors: Ford 8n, NAA, 600 series JD 420, JD430 IH 300, IH 350 AC WD, WD 45 OL 66, OL s66 Case 300 These tractors are usually too pricey (JD 420 & 430) or too large (over 40 hp) or too old (8n) but would likely deliver good service anyway. The IH 300 and 350 are possibly good choices for 1950s vintage, but I reccommend at least a 1960s tractor if possible.

New Life for an Old Allis - by Tyler Woods. My friend Jon, has an old '39 Allis Chalmers B. He thought it a marginal tractor that had long since served its time. She smoked terribly and never had much power but he couldn't afford another so he was limping along with what he had. Jon's Allis has a small front loader and though it doesn't carry much, it serves his needs. It was the hard starting and low power that made him think it was time to replace the old girl. Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start
