If you're going to use Outlook:

In Internet Explorer, select Tools-Options and delete all the Temporary Internet Files.

From Windows Start menu select Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Cleanup and get rid of everything it offers.

Go to Microsoft's web site and download the latest Service Pack for the version of Internet Explorer you have (or upgrade to at least 5.5 SP2).

In Internet Explorer, open Tools->Internet Options and click the Security tab, pick the Restricted Sites icon at the top, then click on the Custom Level button at the bottom. Select the most restrictive of every option it lists, make sure you turn off all scripting and ActiveX. When you're done, press Okay.

Open Outlook Express, select Tools->Options and pick the Security tab. Pick the Restricted Sites Zone. Now Outlook is treated as a Restricted site, it will not run most of the auto-running scripts that infect you with viruses (and pop open advertising windows you don't want).

Getting rid of Klez and the other viruses isn't hard if you know how to run your virus scanner from the MS-DOS command line. Boot the computer into Safe mode (hold the Ctrl key while it boots, then pick Safe Command Mode). Contact the scanner's vendor if you still have problems or suspect the virus wasn't cleaned.

Today's Featured Article - Harvestin Hay: The Early Years (Part 2) - by Pat Browning. The summer of 1950 was the start of a new era in farming for our family. I was thirteen, and Kathy (my oldest sister) was seven. At this age, I believed tractor farming was the only way, hot stuff -- and given a chance I probably would have used the tractor, Dad's first, a 1936 Model "A" John Deere, to go bring in the cows! And I think Dad was ready for some automation too. And so it was that we acquired a good, used J. I. Case, wire tie hay baler. In addition to a person to drive th ... [Read Article]
