the general idea was that as tires move forward, the ribs will "plow" the dirt out to the side as the tire slips, keeping a clean edge of v-treads to bite in. but when the tires are going backward, the dirt is pulled to the middle of the tire face, filling it with dirt, keeping the edge of the v-treads from biting in- basically making a "slick" out of it.
