I put my fence right on the property line since I talked to my neighbor and she wasn't going to have any livestock I did the fencing. Some depends on what kind of fence you are putting up as well. If you are fencing in a small acreage, you can keep the fence straight by putting in your corners and pulling a line of barbed wire to the next corner and tightening it up enough to let it tell you where straight is. Make sure you put some brace posts at each hill and valley so your fence stays tight. I like using hedge posts instead of pine posts for corners. They last longer.
