The main benefit was that you can adjust the speed of the tractor with the trottle since the older tractors didn't have much of a selection of gears. Getting the right speed for baling is very importaint and when a tractor only has six gears and in order to run the pto it must stay running at high rmps, the motor on the baler makes things a whole lot easier. I wouldn't say it's because the tractors didn't have enough power since you need a good size tractor to do that with or else, the stroke of the plunger is going to push that tractor around a lot.
