I have read all of the responses and I agree with some of them. I learned to drive a tractor at the age of 7. It was a Farmall B. This was my Grandpas tractor and I think that it was a good one to learn on. The wide rear end was good for stability. On the left side of the axle there is a place to sit. This would be good for you teaching him how to drive. Trips to the mailbox and never alone were about it for a while. I can remember not being comfortable on a hill even with Grandpa until the age of 13 or older. Iwould recommend doing like you said. Get a tractor that is a safe one now. Make sure that your son is along on every step of rebuilding it. Drag it out as long as you can. I think that this will help teach him the value of hard work and he will value the time spent with you in restoring the tractor. If he is there the whole step of the way and helps then I think that he would be more likely to not take risks with it. Also a keyed starting system I would recommend for his tractor. This would give you a measure of control of its use. Good luck and best wishes. Remember, we only have one life and so does your son. Never take chances and never try to force him in to operating a machine.
