Frankly a security system isn't going to do you any good. Even if you have proof you're going to get told that it's your fault for leaving things out where they could be seen, your fault for having valuable items that were just begging to be stolen. They will let the thieves go, usually with what they stole, and refuse to prosecute. Accuse you of violating their privacy. If you give them any lip, you'll be the one to end up in handcuffs in the back of the car. You're better off just letting them take what they want and pretending you didn't see anything.
Really, worst the thieves will get is a slap on the wrist. It won't reform them. They won't stop because they know there's nothing the law can do to them that will really affect them. Might have to cancel that hot date to make a court appearance, but that's a small price to pay.
What do you do? Is any material item worth a man's life? Because that's the only way to stop it. Lock them up and throw away the key, or... Then you're spending millions of taxpayer dollars to detain someone who stole $100 worth of scrap metal for the rest of their lives, or...
