Until the "New Generation" of JD tractors in the early 60's, the JD design did not lend itself to the 3 pt. hitch (not a good place to anchor the top link). There may have also been difficulty producing the mechanism without patent infringement. JD did not advocate 3 pt. hitch, although, of course, that was a big bragging point of Ford and Ferguson. JD was slow to move away from front-mounted cultivators and planters to the 3 pt., I suspect because of patent problems or because of the design problem or both. So, too, were other makes, A-C, IH included. It is likely that many earlier JD's were sold new without 3 pt. hitches. I can remember hearing, in my youth, farmers, including my dad, talking about their fears that trying to plant and cultivate with the tool behind the tractor (3 pt. hitch) would lead to nothing but crooked rows and cut-up crops! I suspect also that JD realized the benenfits of 3 pts. early on and that it was one of the factors in JD's decision in the mid 50's to totally redesign its tractors.
