George didn't tell anyone make and model of what he is working on, so you couldn't look at any wiring diagram. It is not uncommon for lawn and garden tractors to run the battery positive cable to a remote solenoid, as in the case with his. The starter only sees 12 volts when the solenoid is engaged. Thus, there is no direct 12 volts at the starter, so he is correct in saying it does not have direct 12 volts at the starter. He doesn't say if the solenoid is available to connect the charger positive there and use the frame for the ground point, avoiding the need to access the battery, as was your point about going to the starter to charge.

If the battery was impossible to charge, sorry but even your smart charger wouldn't work. The true statement would be it is inconvenient to charge, it with the charger's clamps, due to it's location. And were your components to build the little jumpers really free? If you paid for them at any point in time, they were purchased, not free.
