People DID speak up. That's why things are the way they are. People were SICK AND TIRED of these stores selling things to children that they used to poison themselves.
Right or wrong, cashiers proved they could not be trusted to use their own judgement, hence the computer oversight. The computer can't look at you and tell you're old, plus not asking your birth date just because you look old is discrimination, and illegal. Yes, it's illegal to discriminate because of age.
The store owner can't sit there and hover over the cashier to make sure they're doing their job. If you have to sit there and watch what they do the entire time, what's the point of having hired help?
