The Mars rover needs power to send pictures back here. And to take the soil samples with it's probe. There are 2 lithium-ion batteries on Rover. One might suspect the Rover is solar powered. But no. To much Martian dust for solar panels. The battery's get electric power from a a container of plutonium on board which gives off heat as it decays. This heat is converted to electric and stored in the lithium-ion battery's. Seems like a type of nuclear power on a very small scale. Mars rover only needs 110 watts most of the time to keep instruments operating & drive around the planet for exploration. And send outstanding color pictures back to us on Earth.
