Pretty common for the main shift lever ball on those to wear on the sides, and slip between the shift rails due to sloppy shifting. You will need to take the top cover off, line up the shift rail slots in neutral. The sides of the shift ball can be brazed up slightly, and filed smooth, to alleviate the problem. Then very carefully set the cover back on, making sure the two speed lever goes into its socket, and the main lever goes into the shift rail slots. Put in a couple bolts, and shift it into each gear, and rock it to make sure it goes into and comes back out of each gear. If the gasket is damaged, you can use a light coat of RTV. Or non hardening permatex.
