208 (as present in 208 Y 120 Volt Three Phase Four Wire Leg to Leg) IS NOT the same as 220/240 in Single Phase 3 Wire


Many non electricians and lay people DO NOT understand the difference in 240 Volt SINGLE Phase, as in typical home 120/240 Volt SINGLE Phase Three Wire service. That's 240 as was 220 or 230 in years past. Its possible to power a 220/240 Volt Single Phase Motor using L1 & L2 as its 240 Volts L1 to L2. Its ONLY 120 either L1 or L2 to Neutral.

VERSUS

208Y 120 Volt Three Phase Four Wire. That's 208 (NOT 220/240).

Of the three L1 L2 L3 legs in the 208Y 120 Volt Three Phase Four Wire Service, its possible to use say L1 to L2 (or L2 to L3) to power a 208 volt rated SINGLE phase motor.

SINGLE PHASE MOTORS REQUIRE TWO HOT PHASE CONDUCTORS (such as L1 & L2) WHILE THREE PHASE MOTORS REQUIRE THREE (L1 L2 L3) Sure, some devices can function on EITHER 208 or 220/240....

NOTE FYI In order to reverse a Three Phase motor (they are self starting) you simply switch/reverse any 2 of the 3 legs.

A Single Phase motor is NOT self starting and requires an out of phase separate start winding. Its the start
winding you switch so it starts spinning one way or the other


Nuff said lol and remember NO WARRANTY Im longgggggggg retired from power distribution design and rustyyyyyyyy but believe the above still remains true. Is easier to reverse a three phase self starting motor (swap any 2 legs) then a single phase (start winding)
