It is true, many older systems use a filter which is inline with the pressure supply and dump the filtered oil into the sump. The pump supply to the engine may pass through a screen. One might use Aviation oil in the case that non detergent has been used or the oil type is unknown. Aviation oil is "ashless dispersant" meaning it will hold the contamination in soultion to keep them from sludging things up. It is not detergent though, therefore it won't agressively dislodge sludge, plugging the filter, causing filter bypass and damage, or filter rupture. I recommend the Phillips 20w50AD oil. I use it to break in aircraft engines, operate them, and have used it for years. I also run it in an old 6 cyl flathead Chrysler engine in my 1946 Clark aircraft tug. I do not recommend the Shell 15w50 AD oil however. Aviation oil was specifically formulated to not dislodge the sludge formed by years of nondetergent oil. Imagine the results of dumping detergent oil into an old aircraft which had been running on nondetergent.
