My 1720 won’t start if the glow plugs aren’t used (or working).
With it losing power and not restarting, you ran out of fuel. Maybe not literally, but fuel is not going to the injectors now.
Either the little tiny fuel filter is plugged, Napa does have them if you are far from a dealer. My first guess. Then You need to bleed the system to get it primed up again. About 85% chance this is it.
Or what happened to me last fall. The fuel line got loose somewhere from the tank to the he filter and sucked air. Really couldn’t find anything obvious, I got a length of fuel like, put a metal fitting on one ed dropped in top of tank, ran it down to the filter and clamped it on well. Primed it and ran great. Something in the old line I never did find leaked. They have metric line and clamps I think, which are hard to find here, so my first attempt to just put new line on the old fittings didn’t work. Took me a while to sort out, always on a Friday at 3:30......
Expensive but small chance, it is the injector pump wore out and isn’t feeding the engine high pressure fuel. Could be, but last thing I would check least likely.

And I think Dad was ready for some automation too. And so it was that we acquired a good, used J. I. Case, wire tie hay baler. In addition to a person to drive th
