We got lucky and had a week of decent weather, just a shower Wednesday night, so I got most all my crops planted. Just a 5 acre piece that's always wet and a couple low spots I went around left. Things went pretty well for the most part with just a few breakdowns. The 1030 did well and runs good, sure pulls good too. I've driven a few tractors that performed above their ratings, and this seems to be one. It's just quick and snappy and when pulling really hangs in there. Funny how you can have 2 identical machines and one works good and the other not so much. Worked with 2 JD 4430s that we're that way, one pulled great, the other was a dog. Hope it stays this way
The 6 bottom plow really made it work, but the 14' disc wasn't much of a load at all. Kept track of the fuel and she burned about 5 1/2 gal/hr on the plow and a bit less than 4/hr on the disc.
The 830 is a different story, she's a pooch. I've driven a lot of 830s and it should walk along nice with that disc, but it really struggled. It shows 7500 hours on a working tach and it looks like the engine has never been apart. Doesn't burn much oil, but has a lot of blowby and doesn't start too good. This winter when I split it to fix the com I'll likely overhaul the motor too.
My grandson Gage drove it for a day, I'm not sure he was impressed. Lol. Said it was boring. Hope he comes back for more tho.
The corn planter worked great, just a few adjustments and minor issues to get started and it worked great. Had a chain get loose and come off, and forgot to bend a cotter pin in the drive that fell out and gave me a missing row for a bit, but looks like it will be a good unit.
The 400 I replaced the engine in seems to run good, starts like it should a d doesn't have much blowby. I wanted to hook it up to the disc and work it some, but didn't have time. But I think it will be good.
I didn't get any pics of the grain drill this year, too busy I guess. Lol. Anyway, here are what the fields look like now. This is south of the buildings and is corn.
This is west and south, and is about half corn half oats. It is mostly spring plowing and so is lumpy in spots where the yellow clay comes to the top.
This shows what it looked like after the first discing, where it was lumpy like that I hit it a few times to try and break them up, it was mildly effective. Lol. Glad for the nice slow rain today to melt them down.
This field is west and north of the house and is oats with alfalfa in it. It was fall plowed and really worked up nice.
I'm very pleased with the soil on this place, I was expecting a lot more of the mucky lumpy stuff, but over all that is a small percent. The rest is still very heavy and hard, but more mellow than I expected and works up very nice. The work I did on the ditches last fall and this spring really helped with draining the wet spots that were taking over. One reason I planted so much oats is so I'll have time when it's dry to work those down and get rid of the ruts and Finnish getting the ditches cleaned out after harvest.
So all is good in the kingdom today! I'm just sitting here drinking my coffee and listening to the rain and thunder and liking life. Wish more of you were in as good of a situation, but these rains look to keep coming for another week. I feel for those just waiting.
