If you are talking sweetcorn, I would say 8--12 inches. I plant the early patches at little over 20,000 seeds/acre since it does not all come up early on. From about now on, I will set it back to 17--18 K so it can still make a good ear if it turns off a little dry.
Yes, I know on good soil with adequate rain you can plant it considerably thicker and it will still make corn. But the seed is kind of pricey, so I like to give each kernel the best chance to make a marketable ear, which means they need their space. I will grow about 10 acres of sweetcorn this year, and I have the ability to water probably half of it, but it is time consuming and costly to do so. Usually end up with at least a couple dry spells where water really makes a difference.
